When I lived in London I worked as a music therapist with children and young people with Autistic Spectrum Disorders and learning difficulties. I also worked with pre-school age children and with adults with learning and mental health issues.
Since moving to the North West I have helped establish and run MusicPlace. My job involves setting up new music therapy projects as well supporting the rest of the team. I have continued to work as a therapist with clients both at our MusicPlace base and on an outreach basis in different NHS settings in Liverpool. I also teach undergraduates about music therapy at Liverpool Hope University.
Victor Hugo said ‘Music expresses that which cannot be said and on which it is impossible to be silent’. For me, this sums up the wonderful way in which music can facilitate someone’s communication and give them a ‘voice’.
